Shapiro, Stanley K. (Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Ill.). Utilization of S-adenosylmethionine by microorganisms. J. Bacteriol. 83:169-174. 1962.-Two types of mutants of Aerobacter aerogenes that utilize S-adenosylmethionine for growth are described. One type also responds to methionine, 5'methylthioadenosine, or a combination of homocysteine and S-methylmethionine. The second type of mutant responds only to S-adenosylmethionine or a combination of adenine and S-ribosylmethionine. The most common type of methionine mutant is unable to utilize S-adenosylmethionine for growth. The mutants are able to utilize the compounds that support growth as the sole source of sulfur. S-Adenosylhomocysteine is not utilized for growth by any of the mutants of A. aerogenes described here. There are no significant differences between the mutants and the wild type in the enzymatic decomposition of S-adenosylmethionine or in the activity of the homocysteine transmethylases. S-Adenosylmethionine does not replace the methionine requirement of the lactic acid bacteria, although Lactobacillus arabinosus shows half-maximal growth with the sulfonium compound and homocysteine. S-Adenosylhomocysteine is not utilized for growth by these organisms.

Polyenylphosphatidylcholine corrects the alcohol-induced hepatic oxidative stress by restoring s-adenosylmethionine.
AIMS Since the late stages of alcoholic liver injury are associated with decreased activity of methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT), we wondered whether this already occurs at the early stages and what is the mechanism involved. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 32) were pair-fed ethanol (36% of energy) or isocaloric carbohydrates (control) in Lieber-DeCarli liquid diets, with or without polye...
متن کاملBoron deprivation decreases liver S-adenosylmethionine and spermidine and increases plasma homocysteine and cysteine in rats.
Two experiments were conducted with weanling Sprague-Dawley rats to determine whether changes in S-adenosylmethionine utilization or metabolism contribute to the diverse responses to boron deprivation. In both experiments, four treatment groups of 15 male rats were fed ground corn-casein based diets that contained an average of 0.05 mg (experiment 1) or 0.15 mg (experiment 2) boron/kg. In exper...

Purpose: The aim of present investigation was to evaluate low frequency low-level infra red diode laser therapy for a third degree burn healing in rats skin.Materials and Methods: 36 rats were divided into groups one and two. On day zero three third degree burns were made on the dorsum of each rat by steam. In group one ,first burn were exposed to a 80 Hz –pulsed 890 nm infra red diode laser wi...
متن کاملCharacterization of a Novel Putative S-Adenosylmethionine Decarboxylase-Like Protein from Leishmania donovani
In addition to the S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (AD) present in all organisms, trypanosomatids including Leishmania spp. possess an additional copy, annotated as the putative S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase-like proenzyme (ADL). Phylogenetic analysis confirms that ADL is unique to trypanosomatids and has several unique features such as lack of autocatalytic cleavage and a distinct evol...
